ACLU Wisconsin Discovers Racial Disparities in Marijuana Arrests, Calls for Legalization

Support for both recreational and medical marijuana legalization in Wisconsin is growing, with 78% of Republicans, 84% independents, and 95% Democrats backing medical marijuana legalization, according to the ACLU of Wisconsin. The organization’s report, “The State of Cannabis,” highlights the significant economic benefits of legalization, with millions of dollars flowing from Wisconsinites to neighboring states like Illinois where marijuana is legal.

Governor Tony Evers’s proposal for recreational legalization could bring in $165.8 million in tax revenue annually, but the state has yet to take action on this issue. In addition to economic benefits, the report also emphasizes the social and human costs of marijuana criminalization, particularly for Black individuals who are disproportionately targeted for possession charges.

Despite bipartisan support for legalization, legislation like Assembly Speaker Robin Vos’s bill for state-run dispensaries has not moved forward. The ACLU is calling for public hearings to allow Wisconsinites to voice their opinions on this important issue.
