Supreme Court rules that Wisconsin’s top election official can retain job

The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Friday that Meagan Wolfe, the administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, can remain in her position indefinitely, providing certainty for election administration in the swing state. The decision follows years of battles over who should lead the agency, stemming from the state’s actions during the 2020 election, which faced criticism and conspiracy theories. Wolfe faced a tie vote in June 2023 after Democrats abstained, leading to uncertainty about her future.

The court’s ruling was based on a previous decision that a state office appointee can stay in office until a replacement is approved by the Senate, frustrating some liberal justices. Despite controversy over the 2020 election, the 2024 election process in Wisconsin was praised by members of both parties. Wolfe, who has been in her position since 2018, expressed her excitement to continue working with election officials as they prepare for upcoming elections in the state.

While Senate Republicans expressed disappointment with the court’s decision, they pledged to ensure free and fair elections in Wisconsin. The bipartisan praise for the Elections Commission’s efforts in the most recent cycle indicates a step towards restoring integrity to the electoral process in the state. Wolfe’s focus remains on the certification of the 2024 election results and preparing for future elections.
