Steven Avery, the man convicted of the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach, is appealing the latest denial of a new hearing or trial to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Despite maintaining his innocence, all of Avery’s appeals have been denied thus far. His latest denial came when a state appeals court rejected his arguments about presenting an alternate suspect responsible for the murder.
Avery’s attorney, Kathleen Zellner, filed a 31-page motion arguing that there are “special and important reasons” for the high court to review the case. Zellner claims that the misinterpretation of evidence by the lower court has resulted in a violation of Avery’s due process rights.
The state has not responded to the motion, and Avery’s nephew Brendan Dassey, who was also convicted, has had all of his appeals rejected as well. The cases of Avery and Dassey gained worldwide attention through the 2015 Netflix series “Making A Murderer.”
