Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) Responds to 11,374 Consumer Complaints, Returning $23 Million to Consumers in 2024

MADISON, Wis. – In 2024, DATCP responded to 11,374 written consumer complaints, resulting in over $23 million returned to Wisconsin consumers through refunds and restitutions. Landlord-tenant issues were the top complaint category, followed by telemarketing, home improvement, and identity theft. One notable case involved a $1.7 million settlement against Berrada Properties Management for violating landlord-tenant laws.

Other top complaints included issues related to telecommunications, medical services, motor vehicle repair, sales, and accessories, as well as travel. Notable cases include a home improvement company scam and a medical billing dispute resolved through DATCP mediation efforts.

DATCP Secretary Randy Romanski stated, “The Consumer Protection team is deeply committed to educating and protecting the citizens and visitors of our state.” Romanski encourages anyone facing consumer issues in Wisconsin to access DATCP’s free online resources or contact the Consumer Protection Hotline. DATCP also offers a free Landlord-Tenant Guide online to educate landlords and tenants about their rights and responsibilities.
