Stephen Mangan to headline a new comedy set on a desert island starring alongside other ‘castaway’ celebrities

Actor Stephen Mangan, known for his roles in The Split and Adrian Mole – The Cappuccino Years, is set to star in a new Radio 4 sitcom titled The Island. This six-part series follows Mangan’s character as he navigates life on a deserted island with other famous Desert Island Discs guests, who have formed rival gangs reminiscent of Lord of the Flies.

In a recent appearance on Desert Island Discs, Mangan shared anecdotes about his early acting experiences, including playing Beauty in Beauty and the Beast and serving as a church altar boy for the spotlight. He also discussed his Irish immigrant background, winning a scholarship to boarding school, and caring for his mother through her cancer diagnosis.

Mangan’s acting career began after forgoing a planned career as a barrister, with his big break coming in The Cappuccino Years. He has since enjoyed success in various television shows and theater productions. Mangan’s latest project, The Island, promises to bring humor and drama as he navigates the challenges of island life alongside his fellow stranded guests.

Listeners can tune in to The Island on BBC Sounds, starting on 17 February, to follow Mangan’s character’s escapades on the fictional tropical island. The series promises to be a unique take on the Desert Island Discs concept, with humor and intrigue as the characters search for rescue and survival.
