Northern U.S. Hit with Heavy Snow and Frigid Temperatures from Winter Storm Systems

Two storm systems are expected to hit the northern United States this week, with the first starting from the Plains on Monday bringing snow and heavy rains. The heaviest snowfall is forecast for Kansas with potential accumulations of 2 to 5 inches. On Tuesday, the storm is expected to expand eastward into the Appalachian and mid-Atlantic regions, with Virginia, D.C., Maryland, and Delaware likely to see the most severe snowfall of 3 to 6 inches.

The next storm system is expected to follow on Wednesday, bringing widespread rain and snow to the Plains and Midwest before moving into the Northeast. Arctic air will bring temperatures up to 10 to 40 degrees below average across the Plains and Rockies, with frigid wind chills of minus 40 degrees in some areas. Certain cities, including Seattle; Billings, Montana; and Portland, Oregon, may experience record lows.

The National Weather Service predicts below-normal temperatures will continue through the third week of February, making substantial warmups unlikely in the near future. The Northeast is starting to see the snow taper off as the low-pressure system moves away, and all winter alerts have been dropped in the region. However, more than 230 flights have been canceled in the Northeast, and lingering snow showers may continue on Sunday.

Overall, temperatures are expected to remain colder than usual across the northern United States for the next one to two weeks according to forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
