Wisconsin drivers are in for a change as newly issued license plates will now start with the letter “B” after nearly eight years of starting with “A.” The Division of Motor Vehicles began issuing seven-character plates in 2017, with 4.7 million combinations starting with “A.”
DMV Administrator Tommy Winkler expressed pride in providing drivers with the credentials they need to travel safely, stating that the switch from A to B reflects the state’s commitment to ensuring safe journeys. Approximately 600,000 license plates are issued by the DMV each year, with around 3.5 million vehicles in the state sporting standard plates.
Before 2017, Wisconsin license plates had six characters, but the switch to seven characters allows for approximately 100 million combinations compared to the 20 million possible with six characters. The letters “I,” “O,” and “Q” are not used to avoid confusion with numbers.
Wisconsin drivers are encouraged to keep an eye out for the new license plates as they begin rolling out statewide this month.
