New ad featuring altered image of Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate raises ethics concerns

A recent attack ad in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court race has sparked controversy as it features a doctored image of liberal candidate Susan Crawford. The ad, paid for by opponent Brad Schimel’s campaign, shows a manipulated image of Crawford with her lips closed instead of a wide smile. Crawford’s campaign has raised concerns that the image may violate a state law requiring disclosure if political ads use generative artificial intelligence.

The high-stakes race on April 1 will determine whether the Wisconsin Supreme Court remains under a liberal majority or changes to conservative control. Despite accusations of image manipulation, Schimel’s campaign spokesperson clarified that the image was “edited” but not created by AI.

Peter Loge, from the Project on Ethics in Political Communication at George Washington University, noted that while the doctored image is concerning, it is not an uncommon tactic in political advertising. Loge emphasized the importance of verifying information seen on television or online.

The Schimel ad criticizes Crawford for a 2001 incident where a convicted rapist was released due to a missed appeal deadline. However, investigations at the time indicated that the error was not solely Crawford’s fault, and she took steps to prevent future mistakes.

Schimel, a former attorney general, and Walker appointee have been running a contentious campaign against Crawford, a Dane County circuit court judge. With both candidates facing scrutiny over their records and campaign tactics, voters will have to decide who they believe is the best fit for the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
