Ben Wikler, Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, was defeated by Ken Martin from Minnesota in his bid to lead the Democratic National Committee. Martin received 246.5 of 428 votes, while Wikler placed second with 134.5 votes. Martin, who previously served as a vice-chair for the DNC and leads Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, will now lead the DNC following the Democrats’ election losses in November.
Despite endorsements from top Democratic leaders, including Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, Wikler was unable to secure the position. He thanked his supporters and congratulated Martin, emphasizing the need to fight for working people and build a permanent campaign. Wikler had campaigned on his successful fundraising efforts in Wisconsin and his role in helping state Democrats win several statewide races.
With Wikler’s leadership role set to expire in June, it remains uncertain if he will seek reelection. State Democrats are now focusing on the upcoming Wisconsin Supreme Court election, with Dane County Judge Susan Crawford facing former Attorney General Brad Schimel.
