Ben Wikler of Wisconsin narrowly misses out on DNC leadership role | News

Madison native Ben Wikler fell short in his bid to lead the Democratic National Committee after being defeated by Ken Martin, chair of Minnesota’s Democratic Party, in a hotly contested campaign. Martin, who won 246.5 votes compared to Wikler’s 134.5 votes, positioned himself as the frontrunner since entering the race in November.

Wikler, who earned the backing of top party leaders and made a viral appearance on “The Daily Show,” thanked supporters and urged them to refocus on Wisconsin’s upcoming April 1 election. During his tenure as chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, Wikler bolstered fundraising efforts and built statewide infrastructure, leading to victories in statewide races.

Wikler had pledged to bring a similar transformation to the DNC, emphasizing year-round organizing work and countering the “Trumpian terror” of the current moment. Despite the loss, Wikler remains chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party.

The race highlighted the importance of grassroots organizing and the fight for Democratic values against the backdrop of the Trump administration. Wikler’s campaign may have ended in defeat, but it brought attention to the significance of building infrastructure and mobilizing support at both the state and national levels. Supporters and party leaders alike praised Wikler for his dedication and vision, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to combat the challenges facing the Democratic Party in the future.
