Ben Wikler from Wisconsin falls short in attempt to lead national Democratic Party

After a two-month campaign, Ben Wikler, chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, lost his bid to lead the Democratic National Committee. Ken Martin of Minnesota was elected as the new chair, receiving 246.5 votes compared to Wikler’s 134.5 votes. Despite the loss, Wikler thanked his supporters and congratulated Martin on his victory, emphasizing the party’s values and vision.

The vote for DNC chair comes at a challenging time for the Democrats, who recently suffered losses in the November elections. Wikler, known for his “permanent campaign” approach, secured endorsements from various high-profile Democrats during his campaign. He raised over $726,000 for his DNC chair bid, with significant contributions from donors like Reid Hoffman and George Soros.

While Wikler was disappointed by the outcome, Democratic consultant Joe Zepecki praised his leadership in Wisconsin, where Democrats have seen success in statewide races under his guidance. Moving forward, Wikler and state Democrats are focused on the upcoming Wisconsin Supreme Court election and continuing to build support from donors to secure victories in future elections.

Despite the setback in his bid for DNC chair, Wikler’s leadership in Wisconsin has seen success, with Democrats winning eight out of 11 statewide races under his tenure. This track record of success positions him and his party well for the challenges ahead.
