A group of Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin have introduced a bill that would limit government-sponsored divisions from flying certain flags outside state or local institutions. The bill, spearheaded by Rep. Jerry L. O’Connor and other Republicans, restricts flags other than the U.S. flag, Wisconsin flag, local flags, and U.S. armed forces and POW/MIA flags from being hung.
The lawmakers cited specific flags that have caused divisiveness, such as those representing political movements or social causes like MAGA, pride, heterosexual, CSA, Second Amendment rights, BLM, ALL Lives Matter, Antifa, Pro-Life, and Pro-Choice. The bill aims to maintain a neutral stance for government buildings and institutions in Wisconsin.
State Sen. Dan Feyen emphasized that the government should not appear to take sides and should provide equal treatment to all Wisconsinites. The legislators were motivated by residents who expressed concerns about the divisive flags being flown on government buildings.
Sen. Cory Tomczyk criticized the use of flags to divide the people of Wisconsin and called for an end to such practices. The bill does not prohibit private citizens or Native American tribes from displaying any flags they choose.
If passed, this bill would restrict the display of certain flags that have sparked controversy and division in Wisconsin, and ensure that government buildings remain neutral and inclusive to all residents.
