Mount Taranaki in New Zealand has been granted legal personhood

Mount Taranaki, a prominent stratovolcano in New Zealand, was granted legal personhood on Thursday, becoming the latest natural feature in the country to receive this designation. Known as Taranaki Maunga to the indigenous Māori people, the mountain is now recognized as a living and indivisible entity called Te Kāhui Tupua. The government has relinquished ownership of the mountain, acknowledging its significance to the Māori as ancestors.

The Taranaki Maunga Collective Redress Bill passed in Parliament, addressing historical injustices and land confiscations against the Māori in the region. This initiative follows similar actions granting personhood status to the Te Urewera sacred forest in 2014 and the Whanganui river in 2017. The legal rights given to Mount Taranaki will be utilized for its preservation, protection of wildlife, and maintaining public access.

The bill highlights the Crown’s past breaches of promises made to Māori representatives, including failure to create reserves as agreed upon in treaties. The recognition of Mount Taranaki’s personhood aims to rectify these historical wrongs and ensure the mountain’s cultural, spiritual, and physical significance is respected.

The local Māori iwi and government will collaborate to manage the mountain, which will no longer be referred to by its colonial name, Mount Egmont. The legal rights granted to Mount Taranaki affirm its importance as a revered ancestor, source of sustenance, and final resting place for the Māori people. The government plans to offer a formal apology during a visit to Taranaki in the near future.
