New Transportation Secretary appointed after Sean Duffy takes oath

Former Wisconsin Congressman Sean Duffy was sworn in as the U.S. Transportation Secretary by Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday. In his new role, Duffy will oversee tens of thousands of employees at the Department of Transportation, which is responsible for regulating the nation’s airlines, railroads, mass transit systems, and interstate highways.

Duffy, who represented western Wisconsin in the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019, thanked President Donald Trump for the opportunity and outlined his priorities which include addressing traffic congestion, airspace efficiency, and promoting innovation in transportation technology. Duffy highlighted the importance of developing regulations to support innovations such as drones, autonomous vehicles, and electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs).

Vice President Vance expressed confidence in Duffy’s ability to manage taxpayer dollars effectively and bring about positive change in the Transportation Department. Duffy has already taken action by directing his staff to rescind or replace stricter fuel efficiency standards imposed under the previous administration, with the goal of making vehicles more affordable.

The ceremony, held in the Indian Treaty Room at the White House, was attended by Duffy’s wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, and marked the beginning of an important chapter in transportation policy under the new administration. Duffy will face challenges in balancing innovation, efficiency, and environmental concerns as he leads the Department of Transportation into the future.
