Eligible Filers in Wisconsin Can Now Use the Free IRS Direct File System

A new online system with the IRS is allowing eligible taxpayers in Wisconsin to file their taxes for free through the federal Direct File system. This system seamlessly integrates with the state’s free online filing program, WisTax, allowing filers to submit their state return as well. More than 600,000 Wisconsin residents with simple tax situations can use Direct File in 2025. The system began allowing usage on Jan. 27, and tax filings are generally due by April 15.

Direct File saves time and money by importing tax information directly from the IRS, with live support available from IRS staff. The system was funded through the American investment bill, the Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022. The bill aimed to increase enforcement on corporations and wealthy individuals, as well as provide better customer service for tax filers.

For those who prefer in-person help, the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax prep services for individuals with income under $67,000. The program can handle a broader range of tax situations and has tax centers open in many parts of the state. To find the nearest VITA center, individuals can call 1-800-906-9887 or use the VITA Locator Tool.
