Apple is set to launch its own series of cellular modem chips, reducing its reliance on Qualcomm. The custom-designed modem will debut in the iPhone SE, marking a major step in Apple’s long-term goal to surpass Qualcomm by 2027. The project, developed over five years and following the acquisition of Intel’s modem division in 2019, has faced challenges but has been boosted by top talent recruitment.
The first modem, codenamed Sinope, will lack some capabilities of Qualcomm’s latest models but will be gradually improved in future generations. The second-generation chip, Ganymede, is expected to launch in 2026 with mmWave capabilities, while the third-generation chip, Prometheus, will integrate advanced AI features. Apple is also working on a radio frequency front-end system, Carpo, to complement its modems.
Qualcomm is anticipating Apple’s shift and has extended its supply agreement until 2026. Apple is also exploring the merger of its modem and main processor. Overall, the modem project is part of Apple’s broader effort to control critical components in its devices and reduce dependence on external suppliers. This move comes as Apple continues to innovate in chip technology, with reports suggesting its latest iPhone 16 features the A18 chip leveraging Arm’s next-generation V9 chip technology.
