Wisconsin Senior Adviser and Former NFL Coach Jack Del Rio Resigns After OWI Arrest

Former NFL coach Jack Del Rio has resigned from his role as a senior adviser for the Wisconsin football program after being arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated following a crash in Madison, Wisconsin. Del Rio, 61, was arrested in the early hours of Friday after his vehicle hit a street sign, broke a fence, and ended up in a yard. He was reported as showing signs of impairment and later admitted to driving the crashed vehicle. Del Rio was released after being arrested for first-time OWI.

Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell addressed Del Rio’s resignation during a news conference, stating that the former NFL coach would be moving forward and taking full responsibility for his actions. Del Rio had been hired in late August to work with the Badgers’ offense and defense, along with providing input on personnel decisions. This was his first job in college football after a long career in the NFL as a player and coach.

Del Rio has coached for seven NFL teams and was fired as the Washington Commanders’ defensive coordinator last season. Wisconsin, currently 5-4 overall and tied for fourth in the Big Ten, will continue their season under Fickell’s leadership. They are set to face No. 1 Oregon in Madison on Saturday. Del Rio’s resignation comes amid a challenging season for the Badgers, but the team is focused on moving forward and continuing to compete.
