Racing Enthusiasts Embrace the Thrill of Drag Racing on Ice

The Merrill Ice Drags celebrated their 50th anniversary at Council Ground State Park on Lake Alexander near Merrill. Started in 1964 out of boredom, the event has grown to include dozens of racing classes and a variety of vehicles, from classic muscle cars to family cars. Participants prepare their cars for speed and many modify their tires with screws for extra traction on the ice. The races offer an exhilarating experience for drivers and a chance to socialize off the track. Club president Bill Bunnell was drawn to the event by the adrenaline rush he witnessed when a car lifted its front tires off the ice.

The event was covered by Joe Astrouski, a reporter for the “Wisconsin Life” project, who traveled the state sharing stories of people and their passions. While he enjoys fishing and hiking, Astrouski also experiences the local cuisine with his wife Charity. The Merrill Ice Drags continue to attract thrill-seekers and gearheads, providing a unique and exciting winter racing experience on the frozen lake. Attendees enjoyed the rush of racing on ice and the opportunity to connect with others who share their love for fast cars. The event’s rich history and diverse range of participants make it a beloved tradition in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.
