James Kellogg, National Vice Commander for the Midwest department, paid a visit to Atlantic last month to connect with the local Legion department. During his visit, Kellogg emphasized the importance of increasing membership and support for veterans and members of the military in the region. He mentioned that the Midwest Department covers states such as Minnesota, the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Oklahoma.
Kellogg stated that the Legion offers a variety of programs for members, from youth activities to initiatives aimed at supporting veterans throughout their lives. One particular focus for the Legion is the “Be the One” campaign, which aims to address the issue of veteran suicides. Kellogg highlighted the sobering statistic that more veterans have died by suicide than in all the wars fought, underscoring the urgency of addressing mental health issues within the veteran community.
As Vice Commander, Kellogg emphasized the importance of community involvement and encouraged individuals to participate in the Legion in any capacity they can, recognizing that veterans and military members lead busy lives. He also mentioned that Vice Commanders regularly visit departments to offer support and assistance, and to assess the needs of the community.
