Court ruling in Wisconsin restores collective bargaining rights for unions, marking a major victory

A major legal victory was scored by Wisconsin public worker and teachers unions on Monday, as a ruling by Dane County Circuit Judge Jacob Frost restored collective bargaining rights that were lost under a 2011 state law known as Act 10. This law had stripped most public employees of their ability to bargain for wage increases and other benefits. The ruling now restores their collective bargaining power to what it was before 2011, treating them the same as police, firefighters, and other public safety unions that were exempt from the law.

Republicans have vowed to appeal the ruling, emphasizing the significance of the upcoming April election that will determine the composition of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Former Gov. Scott Walker denounced the ruling as “brazen political activism,” while supporters of Act 10 argue that repealing the law could lead to financial struggles for local governments. Union leaders welcomed the ruling, expressing readiness to continue fighting for their rights. The Act 10 law, proposed by Walker, was enacted by the Republican-controlled Legislature amidst massive protests in 2011 and has faced several legal challenges.
