Wisconsin’s top rusher, Chez Mellusi, takes leave from team to recover from injuries

Wisconsin’s leading rusher, running back Chez Mellusi, is stepping away from the team to focus on rehabbing from injuries in order to fully recover, according to a statement from the program. Mellusi, who has battled injuries throughout his career, including a torn ACL and fractured fibula, decided to use his sixth year of eligibility to return this season. Despite leading the team in rushing yards and touchdowns, he is stepping away from the team for now to prioritize his health. The Badgers are not ruling him out for the entire season, leaving the possibility for his return open.

With Mellusi stepping away, the team’s running back depth chart is now down to six scholarship players. Oklahoma transfer Tawee Walker is expected to take on an increased workload in Mellusi’s absence, along with other potential options like Cade Yacamelli, Jackson Acker, and true freshmen Darrion Dupree and Dilin Jones. Head coach Luke Fickell emphasized the need to streamline the running back rotation to allow his best players to find a rhythm and be more effective on the field.

Wisconsin (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) is set to face Purdue (1-3, 0-1) on Saturday, with running back Chez Mellusi out of the lineup. Mellusi’s decision to step away from the team highlights the importance of player health and well-being in college athletics.
