Former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice and state Assembly speaker David Prosser passed away at 81 on Sunday night. Prosser, known for his 18 years on the state’s highest court, was appointed by Gov. Tommy Thompson in 1998 after a term as speaker of the Assembly. He retired in 2016, and the state’s law library was renamed in his honor. Chief Justice Annette Ziegler praised Prosser’s contributions to Wisconsin jurisprudence. Prosser’s tenure was not without controversy, such as his involvement in the Act 10 debates, where he was accused of putting another justice in a “chokehold.” Prosser denied the action, and no criminal charges were filed. Prosser later advised against the impeachment of another justice. Despite controversy, Prosser was remembered as a significant figure in Wisconsin politics. Ziegler expressed confidence that Prosser’s impact would continue to inspire future public servants. Prosser’s legacy will be remembered in the state’s political landscape. Walker praised Prosser’s leadership, calling him a “giant in Wisconsin politics.”
