Biden set to become first U.S. president to make official trip to Angola

President Joe Biden will make history by becoming the first American head of state to visit Angola, where he will showcase U.S.-backed infrastructure projects linking three nations. During his visit, Biden will meet with Angolan President João Lourenço and give a speech at the National Slavery Museum. He will also announce initiatives related to global health and security cooperation. The president will fly to Lobito to visit a port terminal connected to a railway line that the U.S. has invested billions in, with plans to eventually connect the Atlantic and Indian oceans. This project aims to boost American presence in a region rich in critical minerals, an area of competition with China. The administration’s efforts are seen as catching up with China’s significant investments in Africa, particularly in mining. Biden had to postpone his visit due to Hurricane Milton but stopped in Cabo Verde for a meeting with the Prime Minister. The U.S. investment is focused on attracting high-standards companies committed to labor, gender equality, health, and environmental stewardship, promoting economic growth in Africa in ways that Chinese spending does not. The trip was reported by Carlo Angerer from Luanda, Angola, and Aaron Gilchrist from Washington, D.C.
