Wisconsin will implement a new 3-cent per-kilowatt-hour tax on electric vehicle owners who fill up at charging stations starting next year. The tax was approved to generate revenue for the state’s electric vehicle infrastructure and secure federal funds for additional charging stations on highways. The tax will help fund road repairs and construction as more drivers transition to electric vehicles. Business owners operating charging stations must also pay the excise tax on electricity sold through the stations. The tax is estimated to generate $3.35 million in revenue next year and $3.85 million the following year. Funds will go into the state’s transportation fund for infrastructure projects. The legislation was passed to meet requirements for federal funding to increase the number of charging stations in the state. Charging stations must charge by the kilowatt-hour to qualify for federal funding. The Department of Transportation plans to use the funds to develop new charging stations throughout the state.
