GOP Senator Mike Rounds Backs FBI Director Despite Trump’s Replacement Choice

GOP Senator Mike Rounds expressed support for FBI Director Christopher Wray, despite President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to nominate Kash Patel as Wray’s replacement. Wray was confirmed in 2017 for a 10-year term to prevent FBI directors from being seen as political tools. Rounds praised Wray’s performance but said he would evaluate Patel fairly during the nomination process.

Senator Ted Cruz, on the other hand, expressed confidence in Patel’s confirmation along with other Cabinet nominees put forward by President Trump. Senator Chuck Grassley criticized Wray’s tenure and called for reform and transparency at the FBI, without explicitly endorsing Patel’s nomination.

The Biden administration also supported Wray’s continued service as director until 2027, despite his appointment by Trump. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan emphasized the importance of FBI directors serving out their full terms to maintain independence from partisanship.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin condemned Trump’s decision to replace Wray with Patel, calling it an attempt to weaponize the FBI and recommending that the Senate reject Patel’s confirmation. Overall, there are differing opinions within the Republican Party regarding the nomination of Patel and the importance of upholding the independence and integrity of the FBI.
