Ben Wikler, the chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, has announced his candidacy to become the next chair of the Democratic National Committee. With the Democratic Party looking to rebuild after recent losses, Wikler emphasized the need for a stronger party to take on Republican extremists. Despite President-elect Donald Trump flipping Wisconsin in the recent election, Wikler pointed out that Wisconsin’s shift towards the Republican candidate was the smallest of any battleground state.
During his tenure as chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, Wikler led the party to victory in seven out of the last 10 statewide races and set fundraising records. He joins a crowded field of candidates seeking to become the next DNC chair, with the party expected to make a decision in February. Other potential candidates include former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and Minnesota Democratic Party Chair Ken Martin.
Wikler’s experience in a closely divided state and his success in organizing and communicating with voters across demographics could make him a strong contender for the position.
