An unexpected snowstorm caused by steam from a factory in Menomonie led to multiple crashes on I-94 in western Wisconsin on Thanksgiving Day. Chad’s Towing and Recovery in Eau Claire was inundated with calls as the factory-induced snowfall caught drivers off guard, resulting in 16 crashes and serious injuries. Phones at the tow company were ringing non-stop as they responded to the incidents, with Wisconsin State Troopers closing off the highway for three hours. The snow only covered a 10-mile stretch of the interstate, creating white-out conditions and hazardous driving conditions. The National Weather Service explained that the snow formation was a result of supercooled water droplets and a “sweet spot” for snow formation caused by the factory’s steam. Despite the unusual circumstances, tow company manager Eric Rehberg and his team worked diligently to clear the roads and assist those involved in the crashes amidst the sudden onset of wintry weather.
