The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is not just focused on road projects, but also on future technologies such as truck automation and electric vehicles. INDOT is conducting research on truck platooning along Interstate 70 with Ohio to create a truck automation corridor, addressing the shortage of truck drivers and highlighting the potential benefits of autonomous commercial vehicles. The American Trucking Association also recognizes the importance of truck drivers and the need for new drivers in the industry.
In addition to truck automation, INDOT is investing nearly $100 million in federal funds to build an EV charging network along Indiana’s alternative fuel corridors. They are also working on a pilot project with partners to develop an electrified roadway that can charge vehicles while in motion.
Roland Fegan, INDOT’s deputy commissioner of construction, sees the safety benefits of truck automation and envisions a future where vehicles can platoon beyond two. However, there are challenges such as the weight of electric vehicle batteries that need to be addressed for these technologies to be feasible.
Despite the potential hurdles, INDOT is looking towards the future with innovative projects and partnerships to advance transportation technology in Indiana. Through research and collaboration, they aim to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability in the state’s transportation infrastructure.
