Reports indicate that Syrian insurgents infiltrated Aleppo by detonating two car bombs, according to monitoring group

Rebels in Syria breached neighborhoods in Aleppo, the country’s second-largest city, and clashed with government military forces after detonating two car bombs on Friday. This incident, reported by a war monitoring group and The Associated Press, has brought renewed international attention to the ongoing civil war in Syria. The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights reported fierce clashes between the attacking insurgents and regime troops, as rebels launched a surprise offensive, seizing towns and villages on their way to Aleppo.

This breach is significant as it marks the first time opposition forces have besieged the city since 2016, when they were driven out of eastern neighborhoods during a military operation supported by Russia and Iran. Witnesses reported Aleppo residents fleeing from areas on the western edge amid missile strikes and gunfire exchanges. An insurgent commander urged residents to cooperate with the rebels, who are led by the militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

Syrian state media reported that projectiles launched by insurgents killed four people, including two students, at Aleppo University. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported at least 121 deaths since the start of HTS’ offensive. This ongoing conflict has disrupted a period of relative calm following a ceasefire four years ago. The situation is evolving, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
