Possible salmonella contamination prompts recall of cucumbers in 26 states

Arizona produce company SunFed is recalling all sizes of its whole, fresh American cucumbers in 26 states and parts of Canada due to potential salmonella contamination. The cucumbers were sold from Oct. 12 to Nov. 26 and were distributed in bulk cardboard containers and generic boxes or crates with SunFed labels. The recall includes several states in the U.S. and provinces in Canada, with consumers warned to check for affected products and to avoid consuming or distributing them.

SunFed President Craig Slate stated that the company is working with authorities to determine the cause of the contamination and urged consumers to discard any recalled cucumbers. This recall comes after a previous incident in South Florida earlier in the year where hundreds of people were sickened by salmonella linked to Bedner Growers Inc. and Thomas Produce Co. The CDC estimates that salmonella causes approximately 1.35 million infections in the U.S. each year, with the potential to cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in vulnerable populations. Consumers are advised to stay informed about the recall and to dispose of any affected products to prevent the spread of illness.
