The Institute for Reforming Government in Wisconsin is urging state lawmakers to conduct a review of state government spending and staffing, similar to a proposal for the federal Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. The group’s plan aims to reduce the number of full-time state employees by contracting for professional services and finding redundancies. They also suggest scaling back Madison-based state agencies and moving workers into the communities they serve to make remote work more accountable. The Executive Vice President of the Institute for Reforming Government, Chris Reader, emphasized the need for lawmakers to rethink how state agencies operate in response to voter concerns about unnecessary bureaucracy. Unlike the federal effort, the group is pushing for state representatives to take the lead in reducing government spending. Polling data from the group shows strong support among Wisconsin residents for reviewing new regulations and creating one-stop shops for government services with a single digital portal. Governor Evers and lawmakers have an opportunity in 2025 to listen to voters and reimagine state government in a more efficient and consumer-friendly way.
