Wisconsin’s Institute for Reforming Government is urging state lawmakers to conduct a review of state government spending and staffing, similar to a proposed federal effort led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. The group’s plan includes reducing the number of full-time state employees by contracting for professional services and finding redundancies. They also suggest scaling back Madison-based state agencies and moving workers into the communities they serve to make remote work more accountable.
Chris Reader, Executive Vice President of the Institute for Reforming Government, emphasized the importance of right-sizing government and reducing unnecessary bureaucracy at both federal and state levels. The group’s polling shows strong support among Wisconsin residents for reviewing new regulations before enactment and having regulations expire after seven years unless re-approved by the legislature.
Unlike the federal effort, which won’t engage with Congress to reduce spending and staffing, IRG is calling for state representatives to lead the charge in reducing government spending. They are advocating for the creation of one-stop shops with a single digital portal for government services to streamline operations.
With the current focus on government efficiency and accountability, Governor Evers and lawmakers in Wisconsin have the opportunity to listen to voters and reimagine state government in 2025. The Institute for Reforming Government’s plan aims to rethink, reorganize, and modernize state agencies to better serve the citizens of Wisconsin.
