A recent altercation between a University of Wisconsin-Madison Police officer and a Nebraska football assistant coach has been deemed a “misunderstanding” that resulted in an apology. The incident occurred after Nebraska’s victory over Wisconsin, with video footage showing Lt. Adam Boardman attempting to separate Nebraska offensive line coach Donovan Raiola from UW coach Luke Fickell and assistant coach Casey Rabach following an exchange of words.
The situation unfolded as UWPD officers were escorting Fickell to the locker room amidst fans rushing the field. Boardman briefly made contact with Raiola, who was reportedly trying to embrace Nebraska running backs coach EJ Barthel. UWPD spokesperson Marc Lovicott clarified that the interaction was the result of confusion in a chaotic environment and that Boardman apologized after realizing Raiola’s identity as a member of the Nebraska coaching staff.
Both UW Police and Nebraska authorities have acknowledged the incident as a misunderstanding. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule downplayed the situation, mentioning Raiola’s history with Wisconsin but emphasizing that it was not a significant issue. Fickell also expressed uncertainty about the interaction, indicating that it did not weigh heavily on his mind.
Overall, the incident appears to have been a brief and ultimately amicable misunderstanding that occurred in the midst of post-game chaos. The involved parties have moved past the incident, with both schools considering the matter resolved.
