Federal Judge Dismisses Right-Wing Lawsuit Over Voter Registration Rolls in Wisconsin
A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the right-wing Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) seeking access to Wisconsin’s voter registration rolls. PILF argued that the state’s exemption from disclosing voter rolls under the National Voter Registration Act should be invalidated. However, Judge James D. Peterson concluded that PILF’s claim was not supported by law or logic.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission had agreed to provide the voter registration list for a fee, but refused to include certain information requested by PILF. PILF claimed it needed more information to assess the accuracy of the rolls.
PILF is involved in similar lawsuits in Hawaii, Michigan, Minnesota, and Nevada, while other right-wing entities are targeting voter rolls in states like Pennsylvania and Illinois. Voting rights advocates and state officials are pushing back against these actions, which they view as attempts to purge eligible voters and create distrust in the electoral process. The increase in lawsuits aimed at purging voters ahead of the 2024 general election has raised concerns among pro-voting groups.
