European MEPs have approved Ursula von der Leyen’s team for her second term as European Commission president, including new commissioners responsible for culture, technology, and the Creative Europe Media programme. Henna Virkkunen of Finland will be the executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, security, and democracy, with a focus on AI, copyright, media regulation, and supporting the audiovisual sector through Creative Europe Media. Malta’s Glenn Micallef will serve as commissioner for intergenerational fairness, youth, culture, and sport, tasked with improving working conditions for artists and cultural professionals and developing an AI strategy for the cultural and creative industries. This commissioner team was confirmed after a thorough assessment process that began with the European election in June. Today, 370 members of the European Parliament voted in favor of the new commissioners to begin a five-year term from December 1. Each candidate underwent a suitability assessment involving written questions and appearances before key committees. The approval of this team signals a new chapter in European leadership, with a strong emphasis on culture, technology, and supporting the creative industries.
