During the Thanksgiving travel season, AAA Wisconsin reports that record numbers of Wisconsinites are hitting the roads and skies. About 1.4 million people from Wisconsin are driving for Thanksgiving, and 132,999 are flying. Nationwide, around 79.9 million people will be traveling 50 miles or more from home during the next week.
Despite gas prices averaging $2.80 in Wisconsin, the increase in travel is attributed to overall economic conditions, consumer confidence, and rising incomes rather than gas prices.
As people prepare to travel, AAA recommends driving on the actual holiday or leaving early on Wednesday to avoid traffic. Additionally, with a cold front expected in Wisconsin and potential winter storms in the Northeast, delays are possible for both road and air travel.
To help travelers, AAA’s Tow to Go program provides a free ride home for those who have had too much to drink while celebrating. The program starts Wednesday evening and is available to anyone, regardless of AAA membership. Travelers can call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246 for assistance.
