Deer harvest numbers for the opening weekend of gun deer hunting season in Wisconsin were slightly down from last year, according to preliminary data from the Wisconsin DNR. A total of 89,203 deer were registered statewide during the two-day opening weekend, compared to 90,831 in 2023. This represents a 1% decrease from last year and a 4% drop from the 5-year average. The DNR attributes the decrease to the season starting later this year, resulting in less deer activity during the opening weekend. However, some counties, such as Waushara, Winnebago, Dodge, Adams, and Marquette, saw an increase in harvest numbers compared to last year. On the other hand, northern forest zone counties like Ashland and Sawyer had a slower opening weekend. Overall, despite the slight decrease in harvest numbers, hunters in Wisconsin are optimistic for the remainder of the season.
