Scam Alert Issued for Wisconsin License Holders
MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) has issued a warning regarding a resurgence of scams targeting professional license holders. The fraudulent scheme involves individuals posing as DSPS investigators, claiming that the victims’ licenses are under threat due to alleged illegal activities.
Recently, several license holders reported receiving calls from a person pretending to represent DSPS. These scammers utilize spoofed caller IDs that display the DSPS phone number and may provide fabricated case or badge numbers to enhance their credibility. The DSPS emphasized that neither they nor any state regulatory boards will ever request payments from credential holders to resolve license issues.
To safeguard against these scams, the DSPS advises license holders to take the following precautions: refrain from giving out any personal information or money, terminate any suspicious calls immediately, and report such incidents to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at 202-324-3000. Additionally, license holders should verify their license status through their personal LicensE account or utilize the DSPS public License Look-Up tool.
The DSPS also directed individuals seeking further information on fraud prevention to visit the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and Federal Trade Commission websites for additional resources.
Professionals are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to prevent falling victim to these deceptive practices.
