Former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman is facing a 10-count complaint from judicial regulators for violating rules of conduct. The complaint accuses him of spreading election conspiracy theories, mishandling taxpayer funds, and engaging in improper intimidation tactics during an investigation into the 2020 election. Gableman, who was hired by Republicans to lead the inquiry, found no evidence of widespread fraud but drew bipartisan criticism and cost taxpayers over $2.3 million.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, who initially hired Gableman, later called him an “embarrassment” and supported efforts to recall him from office. Vos also stated that Gableman should lose his law license over his conduct during the election probe. The complaint alleges that Gableman made false statements, disrupted court hearings, and violated attorney ethics rules by publicly discussing private conversations with Vos related to the investigation.
In response to the complaint, Gableman did not immediately comment. The Office of Lawyer Regulation did not make a specific recommendation for the sanctions that should be imposed on Gableman. It also accused him of destroying public records, making derogatory remarks about opposing counsel, and revealing information about representing Vos while promoting a failed recall effort against him.
Gableman, who served on the Wisconsin Supreme Court from 2008 to 2018, was known for joining with the conservative majority in major rulings. The court is currently controlled by liberal justices. Law Forward, a liberal law firm, has also requested sanctions against Gableman for his actions. The complaint against Gableman highlights the challenges of conducting fair and impartial investigations into election integrity.
