Wisconsin Man Who Faked Drowning Communications Found in Eastern Europe
GREEN LAKE, Wis. – Authorities announced that Ryan Borgwardt, a Wisconsin man who allegedly faked his drowning this summer to escape his family, has been located in Eastern Europe. Borgwardt began communicating with law enforcement on November 11, following efforts to track him down. Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll shared a video from Borgwardt, in which he claims to be safe.
Borgwardt, who is in his mid-40s, disappeared on August 11, after telling his wife he was kayaking on Green Lake. His vehicle and an overturned kayak were discovered, prompting a lengthy search that lasted over 50 days and cost approximately $35,000. Clues hinted that Borgwardt had plotted his disappearance, including acquiring a new passport shortly before vanishing, and engaging with a woman in Uzbekistan.
Authorities believe Borgwardt staged his drowning by dumping his phone and paddling an inflatable boat to shore. He reportedly biked 70 miles to Madison, and subsequently took a bus to Detroit before flying out of Canada. He allegedly aimed to resolve "personal matters," and even acquired a $375,000 life insurance policy months prior.
Despite being in contact with law enforcement, Borgwardt has not committed to returning home, citing concerns over community reaction. Sheriff Podoll emphasized the importance of his return to address the impact of his actions on his family and the community. While no criminal charges have been filed, Borgwardt could possibly face charges for obstructing the investigation. The investigation into the details of his disappearance continues as authorities encourage him to reconsider his choices.
