Texas Board of Education Approves Bible Curriculum for Elementary Schools

The Texas Board of Education recently voted 8-7 in favor of allowing Bible-based curriculum in elementary schools, controlled by elected Republicans. The curriculum is optional for schools to implement, but they will receive additional funding if they choose to do so. Governor Greg Abbott has supported the lesson plans, which could appear in classrooms as early as next school year. However, Democrat attorney Staci Childs believes the curriculum may be challenged in court and is not reflective of the experiences of Texas students.

The move to introduce Bible lessons in schools follows similar efforts in neighboring states like Oklahoma and Louisiana. Texas would be the first state to implement Bible lessons in schools in this manner. The Texas Education Agency created the instruction materials after a law passed by the GOP-controlled Legislature in 2023 required them to do so.

Critics argue that the curriculum’s focus on Christianity could alienate students from different faith backgrounds and potentially violate the First Amendment. Supporters, on the other hand, believe that teaching the Bible is essential to understanding American history and culture. They argue that learning about the Bible will enrich students’ education and help them understand common phrases and references in literature.

The decision received emotional testimony from over 100 people at a board meeting, including parents, teachers, and advocates. Some believe that integrating Bible-based curriculum will provide educational benefits, while others fear it may infringe on students’ religious freedom.
