American Airlines recently implemented new technology at select airports to prevent premature boardings and “line-jumping” on flights. The new measures have received positive feedback, leading the airline to roll out the technology to over 100 airports across the U.S.
The technology requires passengers to scan their boarding pass at a gate scanner. If it is not their turn to board, the scanner will emit an audible beep, prompting a nearby agent to remove the passenger from the line. This has helped prevent overcrowding at the gate and expedited the boarding process for priority travelers.
American Airlines tested the new technology at Albuquerque International Sunport Airport, Tucson International Airport, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The airline plans to introduce it at additional airports, including Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin.
Julie Rath, American Airlines Senior Vice President of Airport Operations, expressed excitement about the positive response to the new procedures. She mentioned that the technology would enhance customer experience, especially during the busy Thanksgiving holiday season.
The airline currently has a list of boarding groups, including ConciergeKey members, first-class passengers, and AAdvantage members. Families with children under two are also given priority boarding. American Airlines has not provided a specific timeline for the rollout of the technology to all airports.
