Jack Del Rio, a staff member at the University of Wisconsin, has resigned from his position following an arrest for allegedly operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Del Rio, who joined the Badgers’ staff in August as a senior adviser to coach Luke Fickell, was involved in a car accident where he struck a street sign and broke a fence. Madison police reported that he showed signs of impairment at the scene.
Del Rio, a former NFL head coach, had a successful career in the league with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders. He also served as a defensive coordinator for teams like the Denver Broncos and Washington Commanders. Known for his defensive expertise, Del Rio’s coaching career began in 1998 with the New Orleans Saints.
Coach Fickell expressed his disappointment over the situation but emphasized the need for accountability and moving forward. Del Rio, a former USC linebacker, made a name for himself in coaching on the defensive side of the ball. His resignation from Wisconsin marks the end of his first foray into coaching at the college level.
The news of Del Rio’s arrest and subsequent resignation has shocked the football community. Despite his successful track record in the NFL, this incident has raised questions about his future in coaching. The University of Wisconsin is yet to announce a replacement for Del Rio’s position on the staff.
