Wisconsin Deer Hunting Season Begins with Emphasis on Safety

WISCONSIN (WQOW) – As Wisconsin gears up for its 2024 gun deer hunting season, set to commence on Saturday, November 23rd, safety remains a primary concern for hunters. With tree stand accidents being the leading cause of hunting-related injuries in the U.S., responsible practices are crucial. The International Hunter Education Association reports significant annual fatalities, ranging from 300 to 500.

Dr. Jennifer Doering, a certified physician assistant at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, highlighted recent data revealing that three out of ten trauma cases treated last weekend were linked to tree stand falls. "Before setting up their stands, hunters need to inspect their trees and surroundings thoroughly," Doering advised. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that the tree is stable and that the area is safe from potential hazards, particularly when selecting new locations.

In addition to tree stand safety, hunters are also cautioned about risks associated with field-dressing deer or dragging heavy game, which can lead to lacerations and even heart-related incidents. Proper awareness and preparation can significantly reduce these dangers.

As hunting season approaches, stakeholders are reminded of the importance of safety measures to prevent injuries and ensure an enjoyable experience in the great outdoors. With increased vigilance and adherence to safety protocols, hunters can help preserve the thrill of the hunt while minimizing risks.
