Press Release: Wisconsin Teams Up with Transfer Portal Standouts in Inaugural Greenbrier Tip-Off
MADISON, Wis. – The Greenbrier Tip-Off, a new preseason basketball tournament, will showcase an intriguing lineup in the picturesque setting of White Sulphur Springs, W.V. All four competing teams—Wisconsin, LSU, Pittsburgh, and UCF—are currently led in scoring by players acquired through the transfer portal.
No. 19 Wisconsin, boasts graduate transfer John Tonje leading their scoring at 22.6 points per game as they prepare to face UCF in the second semifinal on Friday. "Hopefully we can bring our own energy and build a routine," Tonje expressed as he anticipates the tournament atmosphere.
Historically, the Badgers participate in multi-team events (MTEs) to challenge their squad and adapt to competitive settings outside of familiar surroundings. They have a successful record of 7-1 in MTEs over the last three seasons, including notable victories like the 2021 Maui Invitational.
The team’s primary rivals, Pittsburgh and LSU, also feature strong transfer players. Pittsburgh’s new backcourt trio is averaging 46.4 points per game, while LSU’s standout players, including senior Cam Carter and graduate guard Jordan Sears, have decisively enhanced their team’s performance.
Despite being underdogs in the preseason estimates, all four teams have remained undefeated so far, collectively holding a perfect 18-0 record. UCF recently made waves by defeating No. 13 Texas A&M in their opening game, marking one of the largest nonconference upsets.
Senior Max Klesmit from Wisconsin envisions the tournament as an excellent opportunity for team bonding and a testing ground for their capability in a neutral setting. "There’s no real home court advantage," he noted, emphasizing the importance of bringing energy and teamwork—a sentiment that is likely to resonate throughout this exciting inaugural event.
