The National Hockey League is experiencing an increase in respect and team values, with the average NHL team now worth $1.92 billion. This growth can be attributed to steady revenue growth, a hard salary cap, and a leaguewide revenue-sharing system, which ensure profitability for the league’s 32 teams. In the 2023-24 season, the NHL saw a hockey-related revenue of $6.3 billion, an 8.6% increase from the previous season. The league also set records with $250 million in national sponsorship revenue and $2.4 billion in regular-season gate receipt revenue. Richer media deals have contributed to a more prosperous bottom line for professional hockey, with the average NHL team posting EBITDA of $45 million on revenue of $223 million for the 2023-24 season. This growth in team values and profitability is reflected in the NHL’s status as a top sports league, with recent transactions rivaling those seen in Major League Baseball.
