Press Article: PBS Wisconsin Premieres "Wisconsin Lighthouses" Documentary
STURGEON BAY — PBS Wisconsin invites viewers to embark on a historical journey through the state’s picturesque lighthouses in an all-new documentary titled "Wisconsin Lighthouses." Premiering at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 2, the program dives into the rich maritime legacy of these iconic structures, exploring their history, unique architecture, and the lives of the keepers who maintained them.
Wisconsin’s lighthouses have guided generations of mariners to safe harbors since the mid-19th century, becoming symbols of the state’s heritage and architectural beauty. Producer Jeff Pfeiffer emphasizes the importance of lighthouses, stating, “These are wonderful treasures that tell the story of how we got to where we are today.” The documentary is designed to deepen viewers’ appreciation of these landmarks and the sacrifices made by their keepers and families.
The program will feature notable beacons such as the impressive Cana Island Lighthouse on Lake Michigan and the historic lighthouses of the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. It reveals these structures as living museums that narrate Wisconsin’s growth, including tales of heroism, tragedy, and perseverance associated with lighthouse life.
In addition, PBS Wisconsin presents "Illuminating Cana Island," an interactive virtual tour showcasing the experience of maintaining the Cana Island Lighthouse during the 19th century. This online activity allows participants to walk the grounds and explore the daily life of lighthouse keepers.
Following its premiere, "Wisconsin Lighthouses" will air encore broadcasts on December 10 and will be available for streaming at pbswisconsin.org/lighthouses and on the free PBS app.
Funding for the documentary is supported by various organizations and funds, reflecting the community effort to preserve Wisconsin’s maritime heritage. Viewers can look forward to an engaging exploration of these historic and scenic landmarks.
