Blugolds Fall to Cardinals in 3-0 Shutout
WINONA, Minn. – In a disappointing matchup Tuesday, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women’s hockey team suffered a 3-0 defeat against St. Mary’s University (Minn.) at SMU Ice Arena. This loss marks the first time this season that the 10th-ranked Blugolds have been shut out, despite outshooting their opponent.
The game started off challenging for the Blugolds, as St. Mary’s quickly took control. The Cardinals scored two goals in the first period: the first came midway through, followed by a second goal secured during a power play near the end of the period. The Blugolds were unable to find their footing, heading into the second period with a two-goal deficit.
Adding to their advantage, St. Mary’s netted an insurance goal during the second period, further complicating UW-Eau Claire’s efforts to stage a comeback. Despite holding a slight edge in shots on goal, 19-16, the Blugolds failed to capitalize on their offensive opportunities, including two power plays that were effectively neutralized by the Cardinals’ defense.
In goal for UW-Eau Claire, freshman Tegan Swanson recorded 13 saves but could not prevent the Cardinals from finding the back of the net.
Looking ahead, the Blugolds will aim to regain their momentum when they face No. 1 UW-River Falls on Saturday, November 23. The game will take place at 2:05 p.m. in River Falls as part of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) schedule.
