Wisconsin Badgers Secure Narrow 87-84 Win Against UTRGV
Madison, Wis. – The No.19 Wisconsin Badgers remain undefeated, narrowly defeating UT Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) 87-84 at the Kohl Center. John Blackwell emerged as the star of the night, scoring a career-high 30 points, a feat that included 20 points in a challenging second half, where he and Big Ten Player of the Week John Tonje combined for 32 of the team’s 39 points.
Despite facing UTRGV’s sprightly lineup, Wisconsin struggled defensively at times, trailing early and allowing the Vaqueros to shoot an impressive 66.7% in the first half. Head coach Greg Gard noted defensive breakdowns and a lack of physicality, leading to a four-point halftime deficit. The team’s transition to a smaller lineup in the second half, with Gilmore and Tonje stepping up, proved pivotal in stifling UTRGV and halting their scoring momentum.
Blackwell displayed versatility, attacking the paint and converting critical plays that kept Wisconsin ahead. He also contributed seven rebounds, making significant defensive plays, including a vital recovery in the game’s final seconds.
The Badgers’ ability to capitalize on turnovers was notable, converting 12 turnovers from the Vaqueros into 15 points. As the team prepares for a challenging matchup against UCF, Gard emphasizes the need for improved ball pressure and defensive intensity.
Blackwell’s performance aligns him with past Badger greats, as he became the first guard since Johnny Davis to score at least 30 points and grab seven rebounds in a game. Wisconsin’s resilience under pressure and their evolving adaptability will be key as they look to maintain their unbeaten streak in the upcoming games.
