Wisconsin’s Gun Deer Season Kicks Off with Safety Reminder
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding hunters and outdoor enthusiasts alike about essential safety protocols as the state’s nine-day gun deer season opens on Saturday, November 23, and continues until Sunday, December 1.
DNR officials emphasize the importance of safety gear, urging hunters and non-hunters to don clothing that is at least 50% blaze orange or fluorescent pink to enhance visibility in the woods. DNR Hunter Education Administrator Renee Thok highlighted that adherence to fundamental firearm safety practices significantly reduces the risk of accidents. "The four rules of firearm safety are crucial and consistently play a role in hunting incidents," she noted, suggesting that many deadly situations could be avoided by following the DNR’s TAB-K rules: treat every firearm as if it is loaded; always point the muzzle in a safe direction; be sure of your target and what’s beyond it; and keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.
Dane County Training Deputy Pat Kelly reinforces these principles, advocating for a thorough understanding of weapon conditions and the importance of responsible handling. "We don’t want to put our finger on the trigger unless we have a target to shoot at. It’s vital to know not only what our target is but also what lies beyond it," he stated.
Meanwhile, veteran hunter Jeremiah Yahn, who has participated in the gun deer season for 32 years, shares that preparation and following safety protocols are integral to the tradition. "Just getting together with family and spending time outdoors is a great and relaxing experience," Yahn said.
For those looking to fine-tune their skills, the Dane County Training Center will be available for target practice until Friday, November 22, at 3:30 p.m.
